LOD 400 Fabrication
The S17 Bus Station is not just a transit stop; it is a critical node in Qatar’s rapidly expanding public transportation network. Delivering this complex steel and glass structure required LOD 400 precision to bridge the gap between architectural vision and fabrication reality.
As part of the country’s push for a world-class integrated transport system ahead of major global events, the S17 station demanded a rigorous adherence to new government BIM mandates. BIM DESIGN LLC was tasked with a singular mission: ensure the complex structural steel canopy and MEP systems fit together perfectly before a single beam arrived on site.
The “Puzzle Piece” Assembly
The defining feature of S17 is its sweeping, futuristic canopy. While aesthetically stunning, the irregular geometry presented a nightmare for fabricators. Standard 2D drawings were insufficient to communicate the complex connection nodes required to hold the structure aloft.
🚫 Since Clash Detection
Traditional 2D methods would have resulted in hundreds of “RFIs” (Requests For Information) on-site, stalling cranes and inflating costs.
✅ Virtual Assembly
We “built” the entire station digitally at LOD 400, modeling every bolt, plate, and weld to simulate the assembly sequence.
Strategic Implementation
Moving beyond “clash detection,” our role evolved into Constructability Analysis. By working directly with the steel fabricators, we converted the design intent models into fabrication-ready assets.
1. The Digital Fabrication Loop
We utilized Tekla Structures and Revit to create a bi-directional data flow. Changes in the architectural model were instantly validated against the structural load-bearing requirements. This ensured that the “organic” look of the station didn’t compromise its structural integrity.
2. Government Mandate Compliance
With strict new standards from the Ministry of Transport, the S17 project served as a benchmark for compliance. Our team handled the COBie data drops, ensuring that the final handover included not just the geometry, but the asset data required for the station’s 50-year operational lifecycle.
